The ring shout was originally practiced by slaves in the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. The ring shout was rediscovered in McIntosh County, Georgia in 1980. The call and response ritual dance is a sliding counterclockwise movement that usually is performed on New Year’s Eve to celebrate community ties and honor ancestors. In it, a “songster” begins singing and is answered by “basers,” while a “stickman” keeps the beat tapping his cane and “Millie” is a songster. |
